DOWNHAM & CLACKCLOSE CONSERVATIVE CLUB is located in the centre of the historic town of DOWNHAM MARKET. Founded in 1890 in a small room within the town, originally as just a place to meet up and play cards and dominoes. Over the years, as membership grew, several other venues were used until purchasing the current premises in 1909.
Eagle House was once the family home of successful local landowner John Houchen having originally been built in 1823.
Records dating back to 1851 show that the house was then being occupied by Irish born surgeon Dr James Patterson until new ownership in 1861 when the house was bought by local mill owner and corn merchant Jacob Mason Bird and remained within his family until after his death in 1894, when it passed to his son Arthur Bird.
After the death of his wife in 1906, he subsequently sold the property to a Harry Pope for £1,550 in September 1907. Records show that there were extensive grounds, some of which contained vineries and hot houses for the cultivation of melons and peaches.
Following Harry Popes financial difficulties, the contents of Eagle House were disposed of in July 1909 and in December 1909 the Conservative Club agreed to purchase the building for their new premises.
The new Conservative Club was officially opened by Mrs A E Stanley Clarke the wife of the prospective parliamentary
candidate for the constituency, in August 1910.
Over the next decades as the club grew in popularity, it was expanded with the addition of a new billiards hall and the further redevelopment of the land formally used for the vineries and hothouses, to become the new site of the clubs bowling greens.
Further enhancements and improvements have been made with the addition of a new snooker room extension, and conversion of the original billiards hall into what is now the clubs function room.
Membership is steadily increasing and currently stands at over 1100.
